Eknath Shinde: takes oath as Maharashtra CM, BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis as deputy CM

Eknath Shinde took oath as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra at the Raj Bhavan on Thursday. Bharatiya Janata Party leader Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister.

“This is the victory of the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray and ‘Dharmaveer’ Anand Dighe. Our government will work in the interest of the general people and for the development of the state,” Shinde said after taking oath.

Eknath Shinde: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Eknath Shinde and Fadnavis on taking oath as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively.

“I would like to congratulate Shri @mieknathshinde Ji on taking oath as Maharashtra CM. A grassroots level leader, he brings with him rich political, legislative and administrative experience. I am confident that he will work towards taking Maharashtra to greater heights,” he tweeted.

Prime Minister tweeted, “Congratulations to Shri @Dev_Fadnavis Ji on taking oath as Maharashtra Deputy CM. He is an inspiration for every BJP Karyakarta. His experience and expertise will be an asset for the Government. I am certain he will further strengthen Maharashtra’s growth trajectory,”

Eknath Shinde: Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray today congratulated Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis through Twitter.

G for the future. My good wishes to you and hope you undertake good work in Maharashtra” his tweet read.

 

Shinde’s name was announced at a press conference after meeting Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to stake claim for government formation. The BJP leader had announced that he would not be a part of the government.

Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted that Fadnavis would join the Eknath Shinde government

Eknath Shinde: However, a turning point came when BJP president JP Nadda said that the central leadership had asked Fadnavis to join the government as deputy chief minister. Minutes later, Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted that Fadnavis would join the Eknath Shinde government.

Shinde, who served as urban development minister in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government, had rebelled against Shiv Sena chief and then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray. He camped in a hotel in Guwahati and later in Goa with 39 other army MLAs, reducing the Aghadi government to a minority.

After the Supreme Court refused to stay the governor’s decision to conduct a floor test on Thursday, Thackeray resigned from his post last Wednesday night after announcing his decision to step down during his Facebook Live address.

Shinde started his political career in 1997

Eknath Shinde started his political career in the year 1997 when he was elected councilor for Thane Municipal Corporation for the first time. In 2001, he became the Leader of the House in the Thane Municipal Corporation and was elected to the Thane Municipal Corporation for the second time in 2002. He won the Maharashtra Assembly elections for the first time in 2004 from the Kopri-Pachpakhadi constituency of Thane and has been an MLA for four consecutive terms since then. Eknath Shinde made his mark as a prominent leader of Shiv Sena in Thane-Palghar region in a very short time after entering politics. He is known to raise public issues forcefully.

Shinde is the minister of Urban Development

Shinde was appointed as the Leader of the Legislature Party of Shiv Sena after their 2014 victory and then as the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly before Uddhav Thackeray turned into the Chief Minister of the MVA government in November 2019. Shinde was made a bureau serve. He is the Minister of Urban Development and Public Works (Public Undertakings) in the MVA government in 2019 and is currently the Minister of Urban Affairs.
