Modern Love Mumbai : The web series makes you fall in love with Mumbai

Modern Love Mumbai Review: Mumbai city is probably the only true ‘metropolis’ in India. The anthology may not inspire the same awe-inspiring love as Maximum City, but each story has something uniquely Mumbai about it. The series is basically a desi version of US series. Modern Love Mumbai is directed by 6 directors Shonali Bose, Hansal Mehta, Vishal Bhardwaj, Alankrita Shrivastava, Dhruv Sehgal, Nupur Asthana efforts together and brings out the many faces of love, and loss in the city of dreams.

Modern Love Mumbai

The web series, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, is adapted from The New York Times bestselling column and Amazon series Modern Love. The cast of Modern Love Mumbai series includes Fatima Sana Shaikh, Chitrangada Singh, Arshad Warsi, Naseeruddin Shah, and other famous celebs. There are several ‘Mumbai’ depending on what you can afford – Malad, Thane, Vashi, Bandra and Andheri. But there are places inherent in the landscape that connect the ‘Maximum City’—the Mumbai Local and the Sea Link. After all, the words of the heart never fail with distance.

Modern Love Mumbai: All 6 Episodes

The all six episodes- My Beautiful Wrinkles, Bai, I Love Thane, Raat Rani, Mumbai Dragon and Cutting Chai reveal that there are divisions on the basis of caste, class, age, language, ethnicity, gender and ‘what is allowed’ . But love ultimately defies everything, even in a country like ours, where the price of infringement is usually high. When we think of ‘Pyaar, Ishq and Mohabbat’, usually self-love is not what we think of first.

But episode two, Alankrita Srivastava directed by Shonali Bose and My Beautiful Wrinkles, directed by Raat Rani, turn the attention inwards, waiting to be rediscovered. And the most important bit? Self-love is an ongoing journey, and there is no one way to love yourself, just as there is no one way to love someone else. Sarika gives a powerful performance in My Beautiful Wrinkles as Dilbar Sondhi, the woman who leaves her husband at the age of 45 because she doesn’t feel appreciated, while Lali is stunned by her husband. Left because ‘didn’t enjoy it’. Both women learn to be alone and create a life that is best for them.

Modern Love Mumbai: Love Vocabulary

Modern Love Mumbai: Online dating has really brought a lot of words which probably did not exist in our everyday lives till a few years back. From ‘ghosting’ to ‘love bombing’, online dating makes people more lonely, even if the premise is ‘love is a swipe away’. But sometimes, love lies hundreds of kilometers away, and one has to step out of one’s comfort zone, literally and figuratively, to find it, as I Love Thane shows. Love is also about choosing the ‘wrong’ person because they may not quite fit our families’ expectations for us. In both Mumbai Dragon and Bai, forbidden love and the dilemma of choosing one’s self over family or heritage are subtly explored.

Language can be a barrier but also a way of learning to expand one’s horizons. Even better, food can become the language of love. Whatever one decides on the terminology, one simply has to understand the ‘chosen one’, even if no one else does. What the show lacks is the complete absence of the pandemic and its impact, especially in the story on online dating. With Maharashtra being the state with the highest number of cases as well as the longest ban, it is strange that none of the stories are in it. Dating effectively went online during the pandemic, and there’s a lot to be discovered in that aspect.

Modern Love Mumbai: UK Version

Modern Love Mumbai: The second season of the United States version of Modern Love and UK One tackles the pandemic. What is modern love: The lack of Mumbai is a reference to India’s Covid crisis. While creative freedom is a given, what makes modern love an enduring success as both a pillar and a chain is its contemporary nature, and its adherence to the now.

Modern Love Mumbai

All said and done, Modern Love: Mumbai will renew hope in both the city and the love. This is a well  made desi version and should be seen as such.
